Grand Junction Colorado is located near the western border of Colorado, only about 25 miles from the Utah border and lies in the central part of the state from a north to south perspective. The population of Grand Junction is hovering at about 50,000 in 2007 with the regional population at about 130,000 and growing at a steady pace along with jobs and industry. The oil and gas industry has recently resurged in the Grand Junction area and the desert of the Piceance Basin where there is economically viable oil shale reserves, the largest of it's type outside of the middle east. Grand Junction is the hub city for much of western Colorado, eastern Utah and Southern Wyoming and Idaho. Generally, folks from out of the area come to Grand Junction on the weekend to stock up on supplies.

For shopping Grand Junction has all the basic needs covered. Grand Junction has all the general stores one would expect including Super Walmart, Safeway markets, Albertsons, City Market, Sears, Home Depot, Sams Club, Lowes, pleanty of gas stations and other general stores and also features a mall with larger department stores. Gas prices in Grand Junction tend to be the lowest of the surrounding area, usually lower than Utah and other portions of Colorado. There is a nice downtown area with older buildings and it is pedestrian friendly. Grand junction has a number of parks throughout the city and a dog park at the northwest end of town.

If you're into outdoor recreation, Grand Junction is worth a visit. Grand Junction itself is a desert environment. It is so named due to its location at the confluence of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers (previously known as the Grand River in historical times). Recreation that one can participate right in or within a 15 minute drive from Grand Junction includes world class mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, boating, fishing, skiing, horseback riding, shooting, hunting. Grand Junction includes a handful of bike shops and even an REI. Grand Junction also boasts a large adult softball league with both men's, women's, and coed play. There are also a number of golf courses, there's even a golf course right next to the beautiful and scenic Colorado National Monument. For the softer side, there's also many wineries, wine tasting, dining, fresh fruit including grapes, peaches, cherries and others.
