Grand Junction is a desert area. To the north of Grand Junction is fairly barren desert with a light colored silty to clayey soil and a cliff-like appearance from the erosion of the sedimentary layers. To the east is the Grand Mesa, the largest flat-topped mountain in the country offering pleanty of outdoor recreation including skiing at Powderhorn, over 200 mountain lakes, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, snowmobiling, horseback riding, etc., the only thing limiting one is the season and the imagination. From portions of north Grand Junction, outside of town, one can get a scenic view the Rocky Mountains beyond Montrose. To the west or southwest is the Colorado National Monument which is a very scenic view from most of town and is the image shown in the faded picture at the top of this page. Grand Junction is surrounded by seemingly endless, very vast BLM lands which connect up to forested areas.
